“Losers have tons of variety. Champions just take pride in learning to hit the same old boring winning shots.”

-Vic Braden

Sometimes we can over complicate simple things. We want something to be exciting and engaging or we mentally check out a little bit. Has that ever happened to you?

The idea that things we do repeatedly get boring can be a predictor to whether or not we will achieve the results we want. If we decide to try something new to “mix it up” instead of sticking with our routine, it can derail our progress. And while trying a new technique may help us improve, often we just need to keep pouring our effort into being more consistent with our current practices and projects.

One of the biggest challenges I see when working with leaders is getting them to hold consistent meetings with their team members. Meeting with team members can be hard because it takes time, planning, and a lot of energy. These are valuable resources to leaders, so they often elect to do other things instead of holding meetings they know they should have or even committed to.

Those meetings are the “same old boring winning shots” that will lead to success for leaders and their teams. In those moments where we meet with our teams, we are creating alignment between their goals and what we are trying to accomplish as an organization. We are creating connection with and building trust to help work get done effectively and efficiently. We are creating accountability and feedback loops. And we are absolutely showing team members that they are valuable to us because we are spending time pouring into them.

As a leader, don’t overcomplicate it. Don’t get fancy and look for variety or fall for the “latest and greatest” mentality. Focus on meeting with your team and having conversations that will help everyone succeed. And remember, the more consistently you do this the easier it is to have coaching conversations that add value for team members. They will expect those meetings and even look forward to them.

If you are a leader, are you holding consistent meetings with your team? If you are not a leader, is there a habit or routine you should start or get back on track with? Don’t let “boring” get in the way of winning!

Now get out there and crush your week!
