“Your competition is not other people but the time you kill, the ill will you create, the knowledge you neglect to learn, the connections you fail to build, the health you sacrifice along the path, your inability to generate ideas, the people around you who don't support and love your efforts, and whatever god you curse for your bad luck.”
-James Altucher
A concept we discussed in class this week is the danger of comparison. We explored how it is very hard to be focused on your path when looking at everyone else around you. The most successful people have the ability to recognize their path and remain focused on it while avoiding outside distractions.
Those distractions can also lead to lost time and missed opportunities. When we sacrifice our time (one of the only resources we can never get back when it is gone), we are trading future opportunities and possibilities for things that didn’t add much value. This path leads to regret and frustration.
This also leads to a common excuse I have heard from leaders. “I didn’t have time for that.” What this phrase really means is, “I didn’t prioritize it and chose to spend my time on less valuable items.” We know those other items were less valuable or we would say that we chose to prioritize something else instead of blaming time. When we blame time, it is because we know we made the wrong choice.
As you head through this week, my encouragement is to remain focused on your objectives. Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s but ask yourself how you are making the most of your resources. If you do the best, you can with the resources you have, you can look back and appreciate that you gave your best effort. You can be proud of the journey even if it took twists and turns leading you to outcomes you didn’t expect.
Now get out there and crush your week!
