“When choosing what you want to do with your life, don’t do what you think you will be highly rewarded for. Choose what you would be willing to do even when you are not rewarded for it. That is a secret for living a fulfilling life.”
-Omony Geoffrey Ocaya
An important lesson in life is that you can’t just pursue a career that is solely about profit. If you do that, you may find the wealth you are pushing for but will also realize that there was a huge cost to it along the way. Sacrificing things that you love, such as pursuing work that has meaning can lead to frustration, burnout, and a less fulfilling life.
I was fortunate enough to realize this while I was still in college. I was originally a computer science major because I enjoyed computers and an advisor told me I could make a lot of money in that career. However, two years into my major I realized it wasn’t a passion of mine. What I enjoyed about a previous job in IT wasn’t computers, it was the people. Helping people solve problems and fix issues was what motivated me to bring my best to work. That realization helped me shift gears and avoid a career in programming that would have been extremely painful for me.
However, that doesn’t mean my career has always been easy. Sometimes pursuing roles that allow me to help people has been incredibly difficult. There have been opportunities I have passed on, but also opportunities where I have missed been passed on. There is no perfect blueprint and no perfect career. So, if you are passed over for an opportunity you wanted, remember it may not have been the right position for you or now just wasn’t the right time for you to take on that role. Will that advice make it hurt less? Absolutely not! But hopefully it helps you remember that it isn’t the final chapter of your story as long as you keep pushing forward.
And if you continue to pursue your passion, people can identify other people that are pursuing what they love. They have a spark and energy that is absent from the large majority of people in the work force.
So, my encouragement this week is to identify what you are passionate about. Figure that out and then find a way to pursue it as avidly as you can!
And since my passion is helping other people find success, if you aren’t sure what your passion is, please send me a message and let’s partner up to figure it out. After all, I love being around passionate energetic people so I would love to connect with you and provide a spark.
Now get out there and crush your week!
