Josh's Weekly Insights - April 29, 2026

“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”

-Heraclitus

This quote was on my mind this week as I have been thinking about coaching team members and developing growth plans for them.

Rivers are in constant motion. They are ever changing and never stop moving forward unless acted on by an outside force.

This is a great image that aligns with growth for people. We can constantly change and better ourselves as long as we continue to learn new things. I was coaching some leaders this week and got to see their adaptation and growth firsthand. It was humbling to watch them answer their own questions because that shows their growth and understanding of the concepts we have been working on together. (And if you are asking a question here, the answer is yes, the best coaches pass the question back instead of just giving answers.)

However, growth isn’t a guarantee. Sometimes we look into the past where nostalgia shapes our perceptions. We may even be envious of our past self because some of those difficult challenges at the time now seem easy. The problem with that backward view is those difficulties have prepared us and shaped us into a person that can handle bigger challenges. Without them, we wouldn’t be as capable as we are today. If we stare at the past for too long, it keeps us from putting in the effort we need to grow right now.

The past is important because that history shaped who we are, but it is behind us and won’t make the future brighter. What are you doing right now to create a better future for yourself and the people around you? The answer to that question is critical because that answer has the power to shape your future and create more positive outcomes.

I encourage you to always have a natural curiosity and ask a lot of questions. This will help you talk less and learn more. Growth mindset is built on questions instead of trying to have all the answers.

Now get out there and crush your week!
