“I think consistency comes with hard work and execution really. You’ve got to be able to do it every day.”
-Mac Jones
In class the other day, we were talking about trust. A big part of building trust is the ability to be consistent. When people know what to expect from you, they can be more open and honest.
However, being consistent is hard. It isn’t easy to show up every day and give your best effort. In fact, there may be some days where you are tired, have a lot of other issues you are carrying, and just don’t want to show up at all. Consistency to me is the capacity to show up when you don’t even want to be there. And not just show up, but to give your best effort while you are there.
As a leader, maintaining consistency with your team whether things are going well or going poorly sets the tone for everyone involved. When things aren’t going well, how do you respond? If the leader starts to panic, that signals to the team that they should also be worried. However, if the leader maintains their composure and treats it as another obstacle that the group can overcome, then there is a calmness and focus within the group. This creates a sense of trust and belief in our team.
Consistency isn’t about having everything go well, it is about being prepared for the moments when things go wrong. It is about belief in your ability, and the ability of your team, to weather the storms and come out better on the other side.
How consistently are you tackling difficult tasks? This can be a great indicator to your future success.
Now get out there and crush your week!
