“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature.”
-Marcus Aurelius
This quote has stood out to me recently because many people I work with are too busy. The big reminder when I hear “too busy” is that we aren’t thinking about what matters in our lives.
So many times, we catch ourselves in a state where we don’t take control of our thought process or spend time planning. If we never plan, that leaves our time available for whatever comes along to take priority. This can also lead to negative thoughts and self doubt.
Have you ever gone through a day or a week where you know you have been busy but don’t feel like you accomplished anything? You look back and can’t identify where your time went? When I was leading a team, there were too many days where I fell into this mentality.
If you ever catch yourself saying, “I don’t have enough time.” You are taking a passive approach to a process that should be active. You aren’t controlling your thoughts and utilizing your time effectively by prioritizing what matters the most to you. Also, let me highlight the “TO YOU” part of that phrase because you are the only one who can determine what brings fulfillment to your life. You get to be the one behind the steering wheel which means you have all the power. The dangerous thing about having that power is that if you remain in passive mode, the car isn’t turning itself and will eventually run into a ditch.
Keep control of your thoughts and use that increased capacity to take control of your life. You can achieve so much when you make choices, not because you have to, but because you know they will help you get to your desired destination.
Police your thoughts and harness the capital they can unlock for you. If you are paying attention and hear those thoughts becoming passive, grab that steering wheel and get back on track.
Now get out there and crush your week!
