“There is an opportunity cost for everything we do. This is why we must have awareness to ensure that what value we are pursuing is really what we value, because the pursuit leaves countless lost opportunities in its wake. We choose one experience at the sacrifice of all other experiences.”

-Chris Matakas

When choosing what to pursue in our lives, it is important to think about the concept of opportunity costs. An opportunity cost is everything else you are giving up in order to pursue your current activity.

This is a conversation I got to have with my leader today. We are currently in booking season to get our 2027 training on the calendar. While I was discussing opportunities that we have, she paused the conversation for a moment to remind me that everything we add to the calendar comes with costs. In our line of work, every in person training we set up means we will be away from our families, spending time in travel and hotels, or giving up a different training opportunity.

The question she wanted me to keep in mind as we plan is, “Is it worth it?” What she was asking me is, “Are the sacrifices you are going to make worth the opportunity in front of you?” The most challenging thing is when you aren't sure about the answer to that question. What do you do when you aren't sure if the choice will be the best choice? Her advice today was simple, ultimately you will have to make a decision, commit to it, and move forward whether it was the best decision or not. Either way, you will learn something to help inform future decisions.

As I was thinking about that, it reminded me to encourage each of you to think about what you are giving up to p

ursue your current endeavors. Is that opportunity worth the costs that you are giving up in the pursuit? If you answer “yes”, then you should actively pursue it. However, if you answer “no”, then you should ask yourself what you should be doing instead of that option. And if you aren't sure...make a decision and move forward prepared to grow.

Nothing in life is free because you will constantly have to make trade-offs in order to achieve any measure of success. What are you willing to give up in order to attain your dreams and goals? What are your non-negotiables that you wouldn’t trade-off for anything else in the world? Think about those questions and you will have a clearer path in front of you when you need to make decisions.

Now get out there and crush your week!
