Josh's Weekly Insights - July 8, 2026

“Desire is the key to motivation, but its determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence - that will enable you to attain the success you seek.”

-Mario Andretti

Commitment can be difficult for humans because it requires effort over an extended period of time. It is often easy for people to start a new project or set a new goal, but the follow through is often lacking. Think about New Year’s resolutions. They are easy to set, the desire to be in better shape or achieve a better version of yourself this year is even a noble goal. However, so many resolutions are abandoned instead of completed.

Desire is a great motivator to start a project, but desire will not usually be what gets you across the finish line. Grit and commitment to doing something after it is no longer fun is what makes it last.

Let’s think about relationships. A mistake we make, especially because we see it in movies, is related to love. We think it is a quick emotion that occurs and then lasts forever. The truth is that love is about commitment. The phrase “until death do us part” is not an indicator of desire, but of consistency over time. Learning how to work through difficult scenarios and challenging situations with a partner is a strong indicator of love.

One problem with commitments is that many people I talk to don’t want to be fully committed. If we try something without giving it our best shot, then we always have an excuse. This is because we like to protect our egos. If I try something without my best effort and fail, I may have to look myself in the mirror and say I am not good enough. That idea is a mistake, because it doesn’t mean that you aren’t good enough it just means that it didn’t work out this time. Maybe you just need to grow a little bit and then try again later.

My encouragement this week is to look for areas in your life that you could be more committed. That could be as a parent, a spouse, a friend, an employee, or a leader. Determine how you are going to be more committed and lean into that discomfort. When you stay committed even when things get difficult, you will find more success and fulfillment along the way.

Now get out there and crush your week!
