“I worry about the things I can affect, and the things I have no control over I move by.”
-Lenny Wilkens
A great mystery to me is how much humans want to be in control. The reason this continues to astound me is because there are so many things going on in our day that we have no control over. The desire to have control isn’t an inherently negative one, but have you ever gotten caught up trying to maintain control over something that you can’t possibly change/fix?
When this occurs, we pour so much energy and effort into a lost cause, and it keeps us from using that energy to create positive change in our lives. We fixate on that negative we are facing instead of recognizing the positive places we could be spending our time.
Have you ever worked with an Eeyore (Winnie the Pooh reference)? Someone who is always focused on the negative with a “Woe is me” attitude. They are so focused on the negatives that their energy just seems to funnel into that negativity and disappear. The worst part about it is they tend to drag anyone around them into their spiral as well, so it is mentally and emotionally draining to work next to them. They get focused on things they can’t change and can’t muster the effort to create change in their space almost like they enjoy being down.
This week my encouragement is to think about how you spend your time. Do you spend more time trying to wrestle control of situations you can’t possibly maintain control of? Or do you spend it working on factors you can change? The more time you spend working on tasks you can control while avoiding sinking energy into the void, the more success you will create for yourself.
Now get out there and crush your week!
