Have you ever said the phrase, “I don’t have time for that.” I consistently work with leaders on the concept of time management. A lot of leaders will say they simply don’t have the time to get something done. While this may sound true, it is also one of the easiest time management traps to fall into. And most of us have probably said those words or something similar at one point or another.

Here is the truth, it isn’t about time at all. It is about prioritizing what matters the most to you then ensuring you put time toward that project, goal, or strategy. This means it is more about focus than the actual passage of time. Time constantly moves forward which is an immutable truth like the existence of gravity. So, we can’t control the clock, but we can control where we invest that time. Notice the word invest there and you can realize that your time is a commodity to invest wisely. If you do, you will continually move the needle forward on the objectives you want to accomplish.

Another piece that is important is that if you don’t have a goal or focus with your time, it doesn’t mean you won’t achieve anything. However, it is more like gambling with your time instead of investing it. You could end up winning it big, but if you have ever gambled you know that the odds are with the “house”. In real life terms, that means I wouldn’t put my money on continued career success if you aren’t managing your time and focusing on priority tasks consistently.

My encouragement for the week is to analyze how you spend your time. Are you investing it or gambling with it? The first step is knowing where you are spending it currently. The second step I want you to take is to decide where you really want to invest your time. Once you know those two things, you can make more informed choices moving forward.
