“I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.”
-Rabindranath Tagore
Today in class we talked about sales and service. The key to good sales is that it is focused on service. When you offer something to someone that they need, you are doing it right. However, if you offer products because of quotas or other selfish reasons, you are doing it wrong.
This concept applies to so much in life though. When humans do things for others, it creates satisfaction because we feel like we made a difference in the world (or at least someone’s world) today. But when we pursue gain solely out of self-interest
and without regard for the people around us, we are left wanting.
Service can fill us with joy even though it can take a lot of energy and effort. Often, the responsibilities that take the most effort are the ones most worthwhile. Think about the challenges you have overcome in life. Which ones did you find the most fulfilling? I would bet that the ones that pushed you out of your comfort zone and required your best effort were more rewarding than the ones you achieved easily.
In one of my classes about a month ago, we discussed a bit of human nature. An attendee mentioned that humans are “wired” to focus on getting ahead, making money, and what they get out of a given scenario. I disagreed because if you look back through history, the humans that survived were the ones that worked together and supported the betterment of the group. This means we are wired to help other people. Sometimes societal pressures can lead us to forget that piece of our nature, but it doesn’t mean we aren’t wired that way.
My encouragement this week is to look for small ways to be of service and make an impact for others. You may be surprised by how much those little acts of service for others can brighten your day.
Now get out there and crush your week!
