“Find a place inside where there’s joy, and the joy will burn out the pain.”
-Joseph Campbell
This week I have been “playing through the pain” because I injured myself recently. This made my work challenging because I had to adapt the way I present. I couldn’t move and was restricted to sitting for the majority of my presentations. As someone who is in motion a lot, this was frustrating for me.
The important reminder was that I didn’t feel much pain while teaching. There was pain before and pain after teaching. However, while working with the leaders in front of me, my mind blocked out those pain receptors and focused on taking care of them. It was an important reminder that when we love what we do, we can block out the noise.
There have also been points in my work life where I wasn’t aligned with the job I had. The organization didn’t create the motivation where I wanted to show up even when it hurt. In fact, at one of my previous jobs I was looking for any reason not to show up. (I know that is sad to say, but it is at least honest.)
Challenges help us understand if we are operating in the space we were designed to work. If you aren’t sure if you are doing what you should be doing, ask yourself, “Would I show up and give my best even when it hurts? Would my mind block out the pain to help me deliver in my role?”
If the answer is no, look for other options. What could you be doing that would fill your cup with joy? Please reach out to me if you aren’t sure because I would love to help you figure it out.
Now get out there and crush your week!
