“Humility is the solid foundation of all virtues.”
-Confucius
I was recently looking at the topic of resume virtues versus eulogy virtues. The difference between them is focused on intent.
With resume virtues, we are presenting something that we want the world to see. They don’t have to be deeply held values, but what we want others to believe. In that way, they function like a mask. A mask is worn for many reasons, but all of them obscure seeing the face beneath. In much the same way, resume virtues are something we present to the world even if they don’t reflect who we are.
Eulogy virtues on the other hand help show the core of who we are. We live them out every day and show the world who we truly are. We are capable of living them out because they are such a part of us that we don’t even have to think about them. They aren’t for show or profit, but they are about the person we see when we look in the mirror.
A big difference in eulogy values is these will help determine what people say about you after you are gone while resume virtues are used to grow a career but soon forgotten.
My encouragement today is to decide what eulogy virtues you are setting for yourself. What are the core non-negotiable values and practices in your life? If you aren’t sure, I have an exercise for you. Set a timer for 2 minutes and think of every positive word you can come up with to describe yourself. After that, look over the list and select the five that resonate with you the most. These are your core principles of “you at your best” and the ones that you want to be remembered for. Put them into practice every day until those words are just a part of everyday life. Then you will have your eulogy virtues.
Now get out there and crush your week!
