“I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come.”

— Michael Jordan

Too many times,

we get fixated on the outcomes and forget to assess the processes.

I have been thinking a lot about that as my son has been playing soccer this year. His team is, to put it simply, not winning games. That can be demoralizing, frustrating, and even make a person want to quit. The trick is, I can see him actively getting better. He will go out in the yard after school and play with the soccer ball or run drills that I give him. These behaviors won’t just help him during this soccer season, that effort and tenacity are the behaviors that will help him in life.

However, if his team was winning, I wonder if he would be as dedicated. Would he be putting in as much effort? Sometimes our results can be fuel to focus on what matters the most - process.

What is your process for getting better? I think about that question a lot when I am coaching leaders. A lot of times, people don’t think about that answer because we are getting good enough results. When we are getting positive results, we don’t stop to wonder if they were the best results. Only when someone stops us and asks us why we aren’t doing more do we recognize that there was more to give.

My question for you this week is, do you have a coach?

If not, I am going to encourage you to find one. I would be thrilled to be that coach and help you grow. But even if it isn’t me, find someone you can trust who will give you honest feedback and ask the questions, “Was that your best?” and “How could it be better tomorrow?”

Now get out there and crush your week!
