“Be patient with yourself. You are growing stronger every day. The weight of the world will become lighter…and you will begin to shine brighter. Don’t give up.
-Robert Tew
As we wrapped up baseball season for my boys the other day, I realized how often we don’t stop to appreciate growth and development. As coaches, we were discussing how far the boys had come over the past few months. During the season, I didn’t stop to reflect on the growth of each player because growth is so incremental. Slight improvement from one game to the next can be deceiving
until you stop to look back over the full season to see how far away from the starting line we are.
For example at the beginning of the year, my son didn’t think he could hit the ball unless it was on a tee. However, the league was going to be full coach pitch so he had to learn and adapt. He was worried that he was going to strike out every time. However, each practice and each game he got better and better at timing pitches, keeping his eyes on the ball, and swinging through the contact. His growth over the season was awesome to recognize!
However, I think this applies to many of our professional lives as well. We are too close to our personal growth journey and we don’t take time to reflect on where we started very often so it doesn’t feel like we made much progress. We don’t spend time recording progress or analyzing our growth which means we don’t take the time to appreciate the momentum we have built for ourselves. We view each step as taking the next step without looking back to see how many steps we have taken and obstacles we have overcome.
Think about this in your own life. Where have you created positive momentum or traction recently? Is there a routine that you have been putting effort into?
As an individual, make sure to take the time to celebrate your personal wins. As a leader, make sure to take time to celebrate the wins of the people around you. Everyone has done something worth celebrating so don’t lose sight of that. After all, people want to be around others who lift them up.
If you have a win you want to share, send me a message and let’s celebrate your accomplishments!
Now get out there and crush your week!
