Josh's Weekly Insights - July 1, 2026

When I work with leaders, a lot of times we need to plan for the future. By planning, it allows us to continually work toward desired outcomes instead of being a passenger along for the ride. However, what happens if we are too rigid in our commitment toward one outcome?

In life, I have noticed that there are unexpected off ramps that pop up along the road we are traveling down. Some of those ramps may not be something we were seeking or even realized existed. Sometimes we even end up taking a ramp thinking that it is a setback or will keep us from getting to where we want to go.

What if I told you that many of those ramps may be temporary detours preparing you for the future you want? What if the destination only comes from taking a different path and being comfortable doing things that you don’t feel ready for?

Let me share a life story to show what I mean. When I graduated from college, my heart was set on teaching because I wanted to help people create brighter futures. I was sure that is what I needed to do with my life. However, one of those off ramps popped up because I graduated when no schools were hiring so I stumbled into banking. For that reason, I have always referred to myself as an “accidental banker” because that wasn’t my plan. Then I got into banking and realized that I could make a difference and create brighter futures in banking. By helping customers understand and manage their finances more efficiently, I was still able to live in my purpose.

Then about three and a half years ago, another ramp popped up. I had been working in banking for about twelve years and thought I would always work as a banker. Then I was presented with the opportunity to go into teaching and work with bankers. This combined my passions of teaching and service,

so I have been loving this opportunity.

The point of sharing that is sometimes things may look like bad luck. Circumstances in life may look like they are keeping you from achieving your goals. However, with the right perspective and continual drive to succeed you may find that whatever series of ramps you take, you are getting closer to living the life you dream about.

So set goals and dream big, but if other paths come along don’t be afraid to explore those new roads. Flexibility and tenacity are some of the most valuable traits to have no matter where you go.

My encouragement this week is to always keep an open mind. Maybe even look back into your past and recognize how some challenges you faced helped you get to where you are. I would love to hear your stories as well!
