“Change your life today. Don’t gamble on the future, act now, without delay.”
-Simone de Beauvoir
What is your purpose? What motivates you to improve, to strive, and to continue fighting for a better life?
The truth is purpose gives us motivation and a target to aim for. If we don’t know what our purpose is, we can still achieve things along the way. However, without purpose we aren’t doing them with intentionality and may luck into getting things done. If we have purpose, we have an intrinsic drive toward accomplishment that is meaningful and leaves us much more satisfied at the end of the day.
Another interesting thing about purpose is that it typically involves other people. We strive to improve the world around us because it makes the world better for the people we love. Great sacrifices are usually done in service to others and the greater good. There are many stories of war heroes and their goal wasn’t to be heroic, but to protect people they care about.
This is why purpose will always be a better driver than fear. Fear can be very motivating, but it also clouds judgement. Fear can cause you to make decisions that aren’t ethical or don’t support long term outcomes because the fear has hijacked your decision making. Purpose helps you see clearly. It helps you recognize the challenges you face and you can determine which ones lead toward the outcomes you want to achieve. So don’t give into fear, but stay rooted in your purpose. Ultimately, that will help you build a life you are proud of.
Now get out there and crush your week!
