“You have to love yourself. That’s the single most powerful thing. Out of that springs: How are you eating? How are you exercising? How are you resting?”
-Nia Peeples
We have reached the time of year when many of us are taking some extra time off to rest. However, I know a lot of that time may also not be as restful as we hope. Instead of taking some time to slow down and reflect, we spend it running all over the place and going to different functions. While I definitely want to spend time with my family and enjoy being around loved ones, I also know that you can’t constantly be in motion. Sometimes the best thing you can say is “No” or “Not today” when you are being pulled too many directions.
Growing up, my family had traditions for Christmas as did my wife’s family. Once we started dating, our Christmas season became a series of events spread-out all-over town and there was no slowing down for several days. And while I love all of these people and enjoy seeing them, there is the challenge of spreading yourself too thin and not showing up at your best.
I think this also happens a lot in the workplace. We don’t know our limits and keep saying yes to everything which leads us to being overwhelmed. We feel like we aren’t able to ask for help or it would look like we are failing.
Here is my encouragement for you during this season.
-Learn yourself and your limits.
-Understand that you have to take care of yourself first in order to help others. (Sometimes this means saying no.)
-Celebrate with the people you love spending time with.
-Reflect on your year and the growth you have made. (Even if it held detours along the way.)
-Remember to love and appreciate who you are even though you aren’t perfect.
Now get out there and crush your week!
